If you and your doctor decide that branded GLEEVEC is right for you, you can take these steps to ensure you receive it at every refill:

  • Your doctor can write “Dispense as Written” (“DAW”), or your state or territory’s required language, on your prescription.

  • While at the pharmacy, or while placing a mail order, you can verify with the pharmacist that your doctor’s preference is for branded GLEEVEC. You also have the option to notify the pharmacist that your preference is for branded medication even if your doctor did not write "Dispense as Written," or your state or territory's required language, on your prescription.

  • Once you receive your medication at the pharmacy, verify that your pills are branded GLEEVEC. If they are not, you can call your doctor to discuss your options.

Your health insurance plan is an important factor in determining the out-of-pocket expenses for branded and generic medication. In addition, statutes related to a state or territory’s specific DAW requirements can affect your costs. Note that there may be a difference in cost between branded GLEEVEC and generics.

Novartis is committed to making sure branded GLEEVEC is available, but we can’t control what medications individual pharmacies stock. If your pharmacy doesn’t stock branded GLEEVEC, you can ask the pharmacy to special order it for you, which usually can be delivered in a day.

The pharmacy may substitute a generic form in place of branded GLEEVEC. Talk to your doctor for more information.

A generic may appear different from branded GLEEVEC in characteristics such as pill shape, size, and color. In addition, now that there are multiple generic versions of GLEEVEC, pill appearance may vary from refill to refill, depending on which generic the pharmacy has in stock. However, even though the generic pill may appear different, the FDA requires that generic medications contain the same active ingredient as the brand name, and that they function comparably in your body.

Your out-of-pocket costs may change based on your insurance plan design, or from other factors, which can change throughout the year.
